On 29 May 2008, Distance Lab hosted an Open Studio event focussed on the themes of "Machined Craft" and "Haute Tech".
This is the presentation by Peter Schmitt, a PhD candidate in the Smart Cities group at the MIT Media Lab. His work focuses on pushing the limits of digital fabrication techniques for applications ranging from car design to artistic production. He discussed how machines (such as CNC machines and 3D printers) can be a direct tool and augmentation of people's creativity, craftsmanship and artistic expression rather than simply a means to amplify production and quantities beyond human capacities, thereby eliminating the human from the equation. Peter’s interest in fabrication is based on his work at the Academy of Fine Arts, Duesseldorf, where he earned a Diploma in Fine Arts.
