The European Committee for Interoperable Systems (ECIS.EU) invites you to a symposium featuring the director of computing for the MIT Media Lab, one of the foremost research institutions in the world.

Michail Bletsas will talk about the collection of technologies called “the cloud” and how it helps us manage complexity. He will focus on its privacy, availability, security, and the need for portability and inter-operability.

Panellists from the European Commission, the Norwegian government, and the private sector will look at the role of government and standards-setting in fostering a competitive environment to allow cloud computing to thrive to the benefit of business and consumers.

Among the panellists:

Linsey McCallum, acting director at the Competition Directorate General of the European Commission, whose teams handle high-profile technology-related competition cases for the Commission;

Ken Ducatel, head of unit for cloud computing for the European Commission’s Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect);

Katarina de Brisis, who leads on the cloud in Norway, as deputy director general for the department for ICT and Public Sector Reform.

Andrew Updegrove, a Boston-based lawyer who has worked for 115 standards development groups and open source foundations;

ECIS is an international non-profit association founded in 1989 that endeavours to promote a favourable environment for interoperable ICT solutions. It has actively represented its members regarding issues related to interoperability and competition before European, international and national fora, including the EU institutions and WIPO.

ECIS’ members include large and smaller information and communications technology hardware and software providers, namely IBM, Corel, Kolab Systems, Opera, Oracle, RealNetworks, and Red Hat.

The association strives to promote market conditions in the ICT sector that ensure that there is vigorous competition on the merits and a diversity of consumer choice.

Any individual or organization may apply to be admitted as a member of ECIS. In order to be admitted as a member, the applicant must show that it shares ECIS’ philosophic views and aims, and that its conduct reflects this fact.
