This is the next stage of the Elemental project. Mark Humpage and myself spent a week in the USA chasing tornadoes. We went at the beginning of June and it was a very active period with storms almost every day. Normally in June the storm systems move slowly and are easy to chase, but this year it was different, more like May and the storms were racing across the countryside at 50 mph. This made it hard to keep up with the storms, let alone stop to film them and take pictures. Despite this on the 3rd day of the trip we intercepted a Supercell storm in Northern Iowa that produced a tornado close to the town of Carpenter. This video is a summary of that day and the following day when we drove from Iowa to Kansas for more storms. Over the 6 days that we were in the USA we drove 4,500 miles!
The Northern lights is a natural phenomenon I have always desired to experience. It has a magical almost mythical surrounding that has been witnessed by few people in all her glory. The Vikings thought they were contrails from Thor's chariot pulled by three goats. As an elemental photographer I wanted to be included on this elite list and seek out Thor's chariot.
Camera equipment - Olympus E3 and lenses, 8mm fisheye, 7-14mm, 90-250mm, 50-200mm, 14-54mm.
This was the first trip as part of the Elemental Project. We wanted to film and photograph the Northern Lights so we traveled to Norway in February. When we got to Tromso we found heavy cloud cover so we did a weather forecast for the next few days and decided that the best place to be was the small town of Karasjok. We drove to Karasjok where we arranged to meet a local Sami called Oskar. He had some cabins in the mountains and he took us up there by snowmobile. Boy was it ever cold! But it was worth it as we had clear skies at night and got some great HD footage of the Northern Lights with my Sony EX1. We also spent a day filming the ice fields around the cabins.
This is a summary of my April storm chasing trip. We saw incredible cloud formations, hail the size of baseballs and 2 tornadoes. One was near Patricia Texas the other (not in the video) was near Hill City Kansas.
This video was shot using a Sony EX1 XDCAM HD Camcorder during the last full week of April 2008. I will be out in the USA storm chasing once more in May, June and July.
This is the hail we encountered while chasing a supercell thunderstorm that formed near the small Texas town of Lorenzo. The storm was a very pretty storm but did produce hail the size of baseballs. Luckily for us most of the hail was pretty soft otherwise we would have lost some of the vans windows. Check out the lightning clip from the same storm.
The Elemental Project
The Elemental project is a collaboration between photographer Mark Humpage and TV Producer Alister Chapman. Together they plan to travel the world capturing natures most spectacular events on stunning HD video and beautiful photographs. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Lightning, Aurora and Volcanoes are just some of the natural events they hope to record.

Neha & Sid - The Sagai & Sanji
This is our first film of the year, we were commissioned by Neha’s Dad, Virenbhai, to film his daughter’s beautiful and traditional event, at the Sattavis Patidar Centre in Wembley. We were then told that the couple were getting married in India, two weeks after the Sagai & Sanji event. They wanted us to produce a short film highlighting the event which could be displayed for their friends and family at the reception as the couple made their entrance.
We worked day and night to complete this project before they flew out of the country. We hope you enjoy it as much as we liked working on this film.
