Under the direction of MassDOT the most ambitious highway replacement project to date took place during the Summer of 2011 along I-93 in the town of Medford, Massachusetts just outside of Boston, MA.
The http://www.93Fast14.org project replaced 14 4-lane interstate I-93 highway bridges in just 10 weekends under the joint venture of Kiewit Construction and J.F. White Contracting Co.
A typical 55-hour weekend closure began at 10PM on Friday night and ended at 5 AM on Monday morning. Each weekend went exactly according to plan despite unusually heavy traffic into Boston early on to celebrate the win of the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Finals and subsequent victory parade.

During the Summer of 2011 MassDOT embarked on an ambitious interstate bridge replacement project that has set the standard for highway infrastructure upgrades for years to come.
Under the direction of a joint venture with J.F. White Contracting Co. and Kiewit Construction, Testa Corp. Dismantling and Site Contractors completed each initial phase of 10 - 55 hour weekend closures.
After redirecting traffic demolition commenced and continued for 10 hours to completely remove each bridge deck and all the structural steel from one (and sometimes two) 4 lane 3 tiered interstate highway bridge.
Once demolition was completed the site was cleaned up and preparations began for Phase 2 - Precast Erection and Placement.
The 55 hour window from Friday 8PM until Monday 5 AM resulted in the complete replacement of 50 year old 4 lane interstate highway bridge with a brand new, modern, heavy duty version. The 93Fast14 project replaced 14 bridges in 10 weekends during the summer of 2011 on time and ahead…

I was stunned the first time I passed by this demolition site. The sheer size (8 acres), the dust, the noise, the machinery.. I wasn't alone.. Many stop by, look, think.. Are they perplexed? Scared? In awe? Or just unaware?
There's something violent yet incredibly gentle about it all..Human really..
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
