Film School - Filmmaking

  1. Sometimes traveling light, means switching to a point and shoot handheld video camera. The new HD video features on these small cameras have very decent quality. There are problems with stabilizing the video if you want to get some creative moving shots. So I decided to create a video stabilizer for my little point and shoot that allows me to get some very creative types of flying, panning, running, and super super grass scraping low modes...

With a little more scaling in size, and added weights, this can work with the new iPhone 4 or even work as an excellent cheap video stabilizer with those smaller DSLRs like the Olympus Pen and Sony NEX cameras.

  2. Thomas Roberts talks with Curt from View Factor about his collaboration with stargate to create a monster setup which allows them to shoot all angles of a background setting in one take, using their powered cage module as a basis it allows them run battery life to all cameras and also sync recording for all cameras. This is truly a revolutionary idea, which will allow productions to shoot entire sequenses in a sound stage on a green screen and layer it to a previously shot background scene. Along with this Viewfactor is also working on new products like a wireless follow focus which promises to be flawless and affordable.

  3. I have been experimenting with the motion capture feature on the Kessler Oracle system.

  5. This Year at Cine Gear 2010 we got a chance to talk to many very interested and talented people. Thomas Roberts got a chance to talk with Illya Friedman of Hot Rod Camera about the work he does with this new DSLRs. He actually opens up the cameras and changes the lens mount to a professional PL mount which accepts Cinema Lenses, allowing filmmakers to really take advantage of DSLR Cameras by using proper lenses that are actually made for shooting video. This is really what makes it possible to shoot movies with DSLR cameras.
