Fugues Out

  1. One of the best string quartets in the world, Artemis, pops up in a train station, among the passengers.

The Gare d'Austerlitz, in Paris, becomes, for half an hour the center of an unpredictable concert, rythmed by the departures and arrivals of trains. Two of the most beautiful scores ever writtent for a string quartet are played : the 4th movement of Quatuor No 14, along the platform, and, before, the majestuous slow movement of the Quatuor No 15, in the middle of the hall, carrying away all the rail and passengers traffic

This musical and living picture is the third episode of FUGUES OUT, the series of films which dives classical music into daily life. Out of the institutions. Out of plush venues.

One exclusive bonus film (1st movement of No. 14) here > fugues.cc/744

  3. The Great Fugue by Beethoven is one of his greatest achievements, one of the most powerful scores ever written for a string quartet. He composed it at the very end of his life, while he was completely deaf, and desperate.

The music seems first to be very hard and tortured but it countains also a very powerful feeling of joy and liberation. That is why I wanted to film this performance among the patients of a mental institution, Sainte Anne, in Paris.
