UQ Alumnus Andrew Wilson speaks about his career in Environmental Management and what led him to study the field

Planning student, Mr Richard Steller, created this design for the Real Estate Development Planning course (REDE3200) in the Planning Program at The University of Queensland. Students were required to create a report on a precinct design.

Richard used a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks to combine: cadastral data collected from Brisbane City Council PDonline and high quality satellite imagery to survey the landscape and existing dwellings in the Richlands Industrial Precinct. This data was imported into AutoCad 2012 where: roads, underground services and dwellings were constructed to scale in 2D. This AutoCad model was then imported into Autodesk Revit Architecture, where topography of the site was established and all dwellings were reconstructed to scale in 3D. To achieve a more realistic walkthrough, doors, windows, trees and trucks were added to give a sense of scale and point of reference.

Rendering of the model was conducted in 20 hour stages over 1 week, to produce the 2 minutes of rendering shown. These clips and the satellite image flyover of Brisbane City and the Industrial Precinct using Google Earth Pro, were combined using iMovie editing software to produce a more professional result. This video presentation was designed only to compliment the primary assessment piece, An Industrial Precinct Design Report to meet the demands of 21st century clients who wish to better visualise projects before construction.

REDE3200 deals in real estate development planning with emphasis on industrial applications. Students should expect to gain a thorough grounding in development and planning, covering introductory elements, the property/planning interface, due diligence, business structuring, taxation and economic aspects, market and site appraisal, financial and feasibility analyses, industrial precinct design, industrial planning provisions, guidance in writing a development application, decision theory, risk orientation and analysis, and mathematical programming for optimisation.
