BAND refashions the form and content of French film director Jean-Luc Godard’s Sympathy for the Devil for Adam Pendleton’s generation. Using a documentary and essayistic approach focused on the American-Japanese pop band, Deerhoof, Pendleton unfolds BAND in stages, operating across temporal and spatial platforms. The next complete manifestation, at the IKG in September, is a three-channel projection that blurs the lines between the scripted and the live, the original and the appropriated, the historical and the present. BAND uses the structure and filmic techniques of Godard’s original work as a means to explore ideas about contemporary experimental practice, language and the (re)making of history.

BAND was initiated by the IKG and co-produced by the IKG with the support of the Toronto International Film Festival, de Appel, Amsterdam, and The Kitchen, New York.

Adam Pendleton lives in New York. His multi-disciplinary art shifts the meaning of cultural forms, language and images, and has been widely exhibited internationally. He has participated in recent biennials and exhibitions including The Generational: Younger than Jesus (New Museum, New York); Performa 07; Manifesta 7; Object, the Undeniable Success of Operations (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam); Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll since 1967 (Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago); and Manifesto Marathon (Serpentine Gallery, London).

BAND will be at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery from September 16, 2010 - November 13, 2010.
