Alan made all the responsible choices in life: a steady job, a pretty wife, a safe and happy existence. But after his marriage with Mary disintegrates, he is suddenly plunged back into a bachelor’s life at 32, forced to face the cost of the all things he gave up in his twenties. Meandering between newfound hobbies, his job, and meeting new women, Alan attempts to regain all the experiences he passed on while he was married. But nothing is what he hoped it would be. His friends have settled into their own lives, his hobbies aren't quite as romantic as he remembered, and navigating his relationships with women turns out to be more complicated than he thought. Failing in all these aspects of his new life, Alan is confronted with the reality of a life that has been wrecked, uprooted, and scattered. And as he tries to force these pieces together to make a cohesive, sensible life, he realizes just how impossible the task may be.
As Lynn settles into her new place in Los Angeles, the reality of her decision to move in the first place begins to set in. The more she tries to start over, the more Lynn dwells in the past. What began as a "dream of making it in Hollywood" slowly becomes a much deeper exploration of relationships, memories, and expectations.
After taking an acting class in Colorado, Lynn has decided to leave her friends and family behind to pursue a passion she never knew she had. Through a series of phone calls back home and short glimpses into her past, Lynn's story unfolds without a conventional narrative structure; nevertheless, her few interactions provide insights into her character.

Unable to cope with his infertility and the monotony of a dead-end job, Murray becomes withdrawn from his relationship and grows obsessed with a strange Western that comes on television late at night – which only he can see. This movie, which only appears in fragments and seems centered around an elusive stranger seeking revenge, captivates Murray immediately - something about its strangeness and elusive main character deeply resonates with him. Murray's romantic perceptions of the Western lifestyle seem to embody everything that is lacking from his life - and he feels that it's calling out to him. The more his home life frustrates and alienates him, the more this world of gun-slinging and vast landscapes seduces him.
