Deep Ocean Quest's exploration ship Alucia spent several weeks in the South Atlantic off of Brazil leading the search and recovery operation of the wreckage of Air France flight 447. The plane went down on a flight between Rio and Paris on March 22, 2009. As of this writing, the Alucia has been sold to a private owner and future missions, if any, are unknown.

From 8mm film shot in 1970 by Major Robert Dailey, USAF. The short movie depicts F-4 Phantom fighters and C-121 Constellation reconnaissance planes. --- In 1968 I flew 87 combat missions in those Connies. --- Film courtesy the Dailey family and keeper of the Batcat flame, Larry Westin.
From a recently found batch of Kodachrome transparancies circa 1968, I built a 3-minute slice of life as a "Batcat" at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base. Korat was home to the 553rd Reconnaissance Wing, aka the "Batcats," as signified at the beginning of this movie. I was a member of Crew 37, 554th Recon Squadron. We flew on Lockheed C-121 Super Constellations. "Connies" were designed in part by Howard Hughes in the late 1930's and became the flagship…
I like movies about everyday happenings and everyday people. For some time now I've been documenting the retro-fit of a former French sub-tender into a luxury exploration ship capable of circumnavigating the globe. When the conversion is finished the ship will carry three submersibles, a helicopter and HD video production facilities. --- Shot with a Sony A1U, edited in Vegas. Time lapse by Dan Achatz.
(A fine tuned version of a previous post.)
In 1970, Major Robert Dailey (USAF) flew his 100th combat mission in a Lockheed C-121 Constellation for the 553rd Recon Wing (the Batcats) in Korat, Thailand. This 8mm film records the occasion and is through courtesy of the Dailey family and Batcat archivist, Larry Westin.
Personal note: Having flown 87 combat missions in those "Connies" in 1968, I can tell you that 100 missions is a lot of seat time. Missions were 12, 14, 16+ hours each. A long…
Another small movie from my ongoing documentation of the retro-fit of the MV Alucia. A tough shoot in pouring rain, shifting light, f-stop in the basement making it difficult to hold focus.
WARNING NSFW: Occasional salty language on the part of ship workers may offend tender ears and make this video NOT SAFE FOR WORK.
Shot mostly with my A1U (some V1U too) and cut in V8.
I mentioned before that I'd been documenting the ship's retro-fit. When it came time to re-float I thought some time lapse would be interesting. I called my pal, Dan Achatz and he set up this shot. I've sped up his original sequence in Vegas to achieve 30 seconds, did a subtle zoom-in, and added some wild sound to fill things out.
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
