For the Five Lamps Festival 2014, we will turn a kitchen table into a musical instrument that can be played by up to four people at a time.

Based on the principle of the African thumb piano (where sound is obtained by pressing metal tongues attached to a wooden resonator), Fiona Dowling and musician/instrument maker Andrew Ilsley propose to build a musical table that can be played by up to four people simultaneously. The table will look like a normal table, all laid and ready for a meal to take place on it, except that the cutlery will be attached to the table so that notes come from the knives, forks and spoons when their handles are plucked.

The table will be displayed during the festival, and the public will be welcome to sit at it and play, either solo, or in duets, trios or quartet.
