  1. This installation draws information from the intensity and movement of the water in a remote location. Wave data is being collected in real-time from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data buoy Station 46246 (49°59'7" N 145°5'20" W) on the Pacific Ocean. The wave intensity and frequency is scaled and transferred to the mechanical grid structure installed at The National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland. The result was a simulation of the physical effects caused by the movement of water from this distant location.

  3. Tessel is a kinetic sound installation investigating the perception of sound and space.

    The installation is constituted of a suspended and articulated topography of 4 x 2 m, subdivided into forty triangles. Twelve of them are fitted with motors and eight are equipped with audio transducers, thus creating a dynamic sonic space, evolving softly, constantly reconfigurated. The shape of the surface is transformed and synchronized with a musical composition, establishing a choreographic dialogue between sculpture and sound, while altering perception. Recalling Tinguely's poetic machines, Alexander Calder's mobiles or Buckminster Fuller's structures, Tessel is a sculpture that involves time and movement to continue the quest for a synesthetic perception of sonic and spatial phenomenons.

    The name ‘Tessel’ is derived from ‘tessellation’, a term applied to the geometric subdivision of a surface into plane polygons, also known as ‘tiling’. This technique is also used by 3D softwares to allow the calculation of rendered images. The term has its origin in the Latin word ‘tessella’, describing the square tiles used to make mosaics.

    Tessel is based on the ‘pinwheel pattern’, a non-periodic tiling coined by mathematicians Charles Radin and John Conway, which allows the creation of an infinitely complex geometry, only constructed from a single right triangle. Here, the pinwheel is transformed to meet the movement requirements, resulting in a new pattern composed of 4 different triangles, which is then folded and transposed to the third dimension.
    This peculiar geometric construction suggests that the work is only a part of a much wider whole, a finite element extracted from an infinite system.

    The sound composition and the movements are closely linked together : the speed and acceleration of each motors are used as datas to process and diffuse the sound in real-time.
    The geometrical properties of the triangles define the 4 different phases of the composition, while the structure inside each theme follows the dimensions and symmetries of each triangle type.

    Tessel is a collaboration between French composer and artist David Letellier, and LAb[au], Belgian electronic arts studio. Tessel is a co-production of the galleries MediaRuimte (Brussels) and Roger Tator (Lyon), realised with the financial support of Arcadi, Dicream and the Commission des Arts Numériques de la Communauté Française de Belgique.

  4. TUNNEL l TUNEL

    anodized aluminum profiles, steel profiles, spiral springs, taped springs, nylon washers and bearings, triangular bases, brackets with axles, steel cables and screws.

    Tunnel is a kinetic, immersive and interactive sculpture, composed of 92 porticos that become disordered in function of the position and body mass of the interactor.
    Numerous users can simultaneously enter and interact with the machine. Interactors agency the machine via their position and weight. An example of interaction is: you go into the Tunnel and stand by one of the sidewalls. In this case, the relative position and the gravitational force of your body provoke variations of floor height. The floor inclines up to 5º, the associated porticos progressively rotate in the corresponding direction and angle, and this propagates undulatory movements throughout the entire installation. For the outside observer, the internal movement or your displacement in relation to the installation produces kinetic optic effects.

    Túnel é uma escultura cinética, imersiva e interativa, composta de 92 pórticos que se desalinham em função da posição e da massa do corpo do interator.
    Vários usuários podem entrar e interagir simultaneamente na máquina. Interatores agenciam a máquina via posicionamento e peso. Um exemplo de interação é: você entra no Túnel e se posiciona próximo a uma das paredes laterais. Nesse caso, a posição relativa e a força gravitacional do seu corpo provocam variações na altura do piso. O piso inclina em até 5º, rotaciona progressivamente os pórticos associados na direção e no ângulo correspondentes, e com isso propaga movimentos ondulatórios em toda a extensão da obra. Para o observador externo, movimentos internos ou o seu deslocamento em relação à obra produzem efeitos óticos cinéticos.

  5. Double Pendulum Music is an autonomous installation, nonlinearity and chaos are explored sonically (chaotic sound synthesis) and visually (chaotic motion). Establishing itself somewhere between generative composition and kinetic sculpture, the chaotic motion of a double pendulum is used as a source of uncertainty to create chaotic harmonic and rhythmic auditory events in real-time. The natural laws at work create complex aural and visual behaviour from simple interactions. As a result, the events heard and seen are never the same twice, making Double Pendulum Music a celebration of unpredictability and sensitivity.

Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance (LEAP) is a non-profit interdisciplinary project for electronic, digital media arts and performance that aims to initiate the dialogue between art, science and technology. LEAP’s central concept is based on experimental research in digital technologies and media, which shape and change our present and future society and stimulate new discourses, discussions and questions.

The human being (or body) is thus in performative interaction with these technologies and their impact on society and culture. He stands in a transformative process with its environment and thus prompts to challenge the limits of its exterior and interior.
The conceptual and substantive program of LEAP deals with the discussion of new discourses, critical issues and provides a bridge between theory and practice. With its exhibitions and projects, LEAP is interested in this direct involvement of the urban environment outside the gallery, incorporating this relationship into its experimental context and in exploring the progressive fusion of real and virtual space.
