1. The challenge: to use the lenses wide open to get the most shallow dof in GH2. But this makes the image soft because almost all lenses are soft wide open. So what is the solution?

    When you read the word "IMPROVED" in top right corner of video it means the image was graded in post-production to correct softness with these settings: sharpen 20, gamma correction 11, brightness -3, contrast 2.

    Instead of Sharpen 20 you can apply Sharpen 10 plus Unsharp Mask 80 / 1,2 / 0. Of course the amount must change due to more or less softness.

    I used the same post-production settings for all lenses and all fstops to get some kind of comparison.

    If you realize the sharpening brings more noise to image you can apply some noise reduction filter.

    GH2 was set to Cinema, Contrast 0, Sharpness -2, Saturation +2, Noise Reduction -2, Hacked 40Mbps, 24p 1920 x 1080.

    Same custom white balance for all lenses, all iso 400.

    The conclusions:

    It is possible to use the lenses wide open and correct softness in post production.

    Stopping down 1 fstop from the widest aperture helps a lot to avoid softness in all lenses and keeps the shallow dof almost the same.

    The way to go: Stop down 1 fstop from the widest aperture and do a softness correction in post production using settings similar to described above to improve image quality.

    If you can, stop down 2 fstops from the widest aperture. The image will be even better. f2.8 is a good aperture to get a decent shallow dof in GH2. So if you have a fast lens stop it down to 2.8 and try what you get.

    Never let the image gets overexposed. This will make the image quality very bad, a lot more soft, dificult to correct in post production. When using a third part lens in GH2 with an adapter, set the metering to SPOT and use a 18% grey card. In this video I measured light in person face using the spot meter in GH2, but the image got overexposed 1/3 fstop. You can see when the image is correct exposed in LCD or viewfinder, you just need to train your eyes.

    The Lumix 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 is the reference lens. It is tack sharp and a nice contrast lens.

  3. This Soligor is amazing to do zoom. It has three rings, one for focus, one for zoom and one for aperture. It is a two touch lens. Due to this design the focus stays the same when zooming. The zoom ring is incredibly smooth and the zoom range is big enough to start from the person body and gets just the face, like that zoom in the Closer movie. The constant f3.5 aperture keeps the same light when zooming. It has a nice bokeh. The Soligor was stoped down to f5.6 in this test. This and the Asanuma are the best zoom lenses I have tested.
    Esta Soligor é ótima para fazer zoom. Ela tem três anéis, um para foco, um para zoom e outro para abertura. É uma lente de dois toques. Devido a este design o foco permanece o mesmo enquanto se faz o zoom. O anel de zoom é inacreditavelmente macio e a extensão do zoom é grande o suficiente para começar com o corpo da pessoa e chegar no rosto como aquele zoom no filme Perto Demais. A abertura constante de f3.5 mantém a mesma luz durante o zoom. Ela tem um desfoque bonito. A Soligor foi regulada em f5.6 neste teste. Esta e a Asanuma são as melhores lentes zoom que eu já testei.

  4. Apefos 35mm adapter and a nice Canon FD 300mm telephoto that makes possible shotting away from people and get a wonderfull bokeh. I was thinking a 300mm was not so usefull due to it's narrow field of view but I became impressed with the images beauty. The images gets a great filmlook, the perspective becames very narrow and charming. It is amazing to start to folow people in a dialogue before to close in the faces separately. The fact of filming away gives to the image more real felling. I think this Canon Fd is better than Nikon 300mm f4.5 due to be faster. And the focus ring is incredibly smooth.
    Apefos Adaptador 35mm e uma bela lente tele que permite gravar longe das pessoas e obter um belo desfoque no fundo. Eu pensava que 300mm não era tão útil em virtude de seu estreito campo de visão, mas fiquei impressionado com a beleza das imagens. As imagens atingem um belo estilo cinematográfico, a perspectiva fica muito estreita e encantadora, charmosa. É ótima para iniciar um diálogo seguindo as pessoas antes de fechar nos rostos em separado. O fato de a filmagem ser feita a distância dá para a imagem mais sensação de realidade. Penso que esta Canon FD é melhor do que aNikon 300mm f4.5 devido ser mais rápida. E o anel de foco é extraordinariamente suave.

    This lens is fast to its focal length. It narrows the field of view and blurs so much the background so it is usefull to make everything in the second plane to became not important. It is usefull to bring far objects and people close.
    Esta é uma lente rápida para sua distancia focal. Ela estreita bastante o campo de visão e borra bastante o fundo fazendo o segundo plano ser menos importante. Ela é útil para trazer objetos e pessoas distantes para perto.
