Video Reflections: Lent 2014

  1. Julie Anne Miller is a songwriter, singer, and recording artist currently living in Nashville, Tennessee. Miller's 1993 album Orphans and Angels included a duet with Emmylou Harris on the song "All My Tears", which has become one of Miller's most popular songs. The song was written after the death of Mark Heard, American record producer and folk rock singer/songwriter, who died from complications of a heart attack while performing on stage at the Cornerstone Festival, near Chicago.

  2. The word "yavari" is a mestizo derivation of the Quechua term harawi which is used to designate sad and romantic songs, cultivated not only by Indians, but also mestizos of provincial towns, which has taken place in Peru from the second half of the eighteenth century. Originally, the pre-Hispanic Indian harawi was a polysemic, plaintive (farewell or funeral) or even celebratory (at times of harvest or completion of a roof on a house) ritual song, and was not only related to love. It was also accompanied with “tinyas” or flutes, or just pure voices, and always in Quechua. The “yaraví” mestizo however, has been sung mostly in Spanish and is linked more to the mestizo nobel culture.

Lord, may our life be like a
flute, simple and upright,

So that you may fill it,
fill it with your music.
Lord, may our life be like
 soft clay in your hands,

    That you may shape it,
 shape it in your way.
    Lord, may our life be
A grain thrown into the wind,

So that you may plant it,
 plant it where you like.

  4. The opera tells the apocalyptic romance of Dido and Aeneas. The Trojan Warrior Aeneas, seeking Italy in order to settle there and secure his son's lineage, is blown off course from Sicily, and lands on the shores of Northern Africa, in Carthage. Their queen is Dido, with whom Aeneas has a love affair, before departing for Italy and leaving Dido alone. She becomes so distraught that she orders for a large pyre to be placed, on which she plans to impale herself, and be set ablaze so that Aeneas will see from his ship.
