Livelooping in Antwerp

A livelooping improvisation by Michael Peters during the May 30, 2009 international livelooping festival in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Hohner guitar (tuned in NST) was augmented with a Sustainiac Model C and a midi pickup. The guitar signal and the midi signal went into a Plogue Bidule setup which contained various guitar effects and midi instruments as well as livelooping software (LoopV by Matthias Grob).

The percussion loops were sampled from Glen Velez. The spoken voice is a Hugo Ball poem found on Ubuweb.

Gavin Castleton performs a live looping version of Nothing Compares 2 U (made famous by Sinead O'Connor), accompanied by Erin Hunt using a Gilbraunsen pump organ, a JP8000, and a Line 6 Delay/looping pedal. However, the was performance was multitracked with Ableton 7 for better mixdown/effecting in post.

Educational piece to demonstrate how chord progressions can be achieved in live looping performed music. Two techniques are showed. One is to create different chords as separate loops, in order to switch loop for a musical chord change. Another method is to re-tune one loop on the fly to make it change pitch and become a new chord. This technique, "varispeed", also changes the length and speed/tempo of the loop. You can hear that in the middle section of this song. This adds yet another rhythmic component for the player to consider.

Well I was inspired to improvise this piece while watching the video. I then rerendered it as best I could and he graciously allowed me to post it here unheard. Brave man.
The music is looped electric guitar w/Sustainor system through a Line 6 DL 4 almost to the runaway point. It was scary playing it I must say. I hope you enjoy "Visions of La Push" the not so silent version.

This is probably the first video of a sync'd LiveLooping act!
Loopstock was one of the first Live-Looping festivals in US. I asked on Loopers-Delight whether someone could give me a ride to San Louis Obisbo. Jon offered it. Chatting with him, we found it might be nice to play together. So we met a few days before the festival and tested the synchronization of our rig (Echoplex DP MIDI slave of Repeater) and found our music. It was a lot of fun!

There's nothing pre-recorded here, no midi-triggered sounds, no keyboards. Just bass, two pedals (Line 6 DL4 and Akai Headrush), a slide and an ebow.

The track starts out as a pretty mashed up version of 'Don't Stop Believing' ' by Journey, with a bit of a quote from With Or Without You by U2 in there somewhere, and then it morphs. Into.... I'm not sure... you tell me :)

LOOP!STATION was formed in July 2002 by Sam Bass and Robin Coomer almost by accident. Robin asked Sam if he would come and play some cello at her upcoming photography show. He convinced Robin to join him and his new favorite tool the loop station. After going to the music store and getting her own, they only had two rehearsals before the opening thinking they would only play one show. But after an overwhelming crowd response and sixty five new emails on a list, they decided to play again, and again... Their first c.d. 'conversations with water' was released in July 2003 with amazing response. Suddenly what had started out as an escape for these two classically trained musicians from their respective rock bands, (Deadweight and Birdsaw) and the pressures of writing the 'perfect' 3:30 second pop song, had turned into an escape for their listeners as well. LOOP!STATION sample themselves live and 'loop' the parts creating honest and unique compositions. The shows are intense and captivating. When you get the album home and it sounds just like the show you just saw, it becomes very apparent that LOOP!STATION is operating in a world all its own, a world that is really freaking awesome...Visit LOOP!STATION at MOLI.com
