Memory Tricks!

How did you learn your times tables? Hard words to spell? MEMORY TRICKS is a collaborative animation project made by fifth-grade girls & young women animation students at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The fifth grade girls are classmates at the Jemicy School, which uses innovative methods to teach kids with dyslexia. This project is an experiential learning project designed to help them share their favorite mnemonic devices with other kids. Led by art educator and independent animator Lynn Tomlinson, the MICA students served as mentors for the fifth-grade girls, helping them bring their ideas to life through animation. The project was funded by MICA's Office of Community Engagement, and a successful Kickstarter campaign: kck.st/GWsjtc

This channel includes the Memory Tricks project, and a collection of animated spots created by the members of the Memory Tricks team. Memory Tricks is collaborative animation project made by kids and college students, using hand-made animation methods. These multi-sensory mnemonic devices help kids remember things -- like multiplication problems and how to spell common words. The project is led by animator and educator Lynn Tomlinson. The kids who created this first round of Memory Tricks attend the Jemicy School, a school that educated kids with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences using multi-sensory methods and experiential learning. Working with young women mentors from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) the eight fifth-grade girls created these short animated mnemonic devices to share with their classmates and others. Inspired by shows like School House Rock and the Electric Company, the team made animation that is memorable and fun to watch! You can learn more about the launch of this project by visiting our successful Kickstarter: kck.st/GWsjtc
