In spite of having monster engines, many hot rods will never see a mile on the road. These cars, built entirely for show, are referred to as “trailer queens” and it’s not necessarily a compliment. Troy Trepanier of Rad Rides by Troy in Manteno, IL, has built his share of trailer queens.
That doesn’t mean Troy isn’t into going fast. It just means he has somehow managed to master both ends of the spectrum. He’s good at show and GO.
The Nation of GO Tour stop at Quigley Motor Company was bittersweet for the Tour crew. We were sad knowing that we’d soon be sending our trusted 4X4 van back home. But while we were there, owner Mike Quigley and his friends took us out for some four-wheeling fun in, among others, a conversion van that still had curtains in the windows. That was pretty sweet.
Quigley is a family-owned business that specializes in 4X4 van conversions, but they also put out off-road ambulances, school buses for districts that get a ton of snow, and even luxury limousine buses converted for shuttle service at ski resorts. If you ever need to drive a bunch of people into hard-to-reach places, Quigley is your obvious choice.
Driving through Illinois, the Nation of GO Tour had to make a stop in Woodstock to see Schwartz Performance owner Jeff Schwartz and his 0-200-0 mph world-record Ultima GTR. Schwartz started by building the Ultima GTR from a kit, and then added a 1000-hp twin-turbo LS-2 engine that he also built himself.
Zero to sixty in just 2 seconds must be something you have to experience. Because the two Tour crew members who got to ride in Jeff’s Ultima couldn’t muster an explanation better than, “Words can’t describe it.”
There’s a Honda research facility in northern Ohio that’s used the to test vehicle dynamics and reliability. Besides testing its own vehicles, Honda also offers the facility to other manufactures so you may see things there that aren’t yet meant for public consumption. Your phone’s camera will be taped over before you go in. And everything your cameraman shoots must be reviewed and approved before you can leave. With all the secrecy, you can be forgiven if you haven’t heard a lot about Team Honda Research.
