About Maria....
MARIA DEL CAMINO is a love poem to the car and Her demise...The body of Maria del Camino is a modified ’59 El Camino...on her hood and chassis, thousands of holes pixelate the figure of "False Maria" from Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis.

A five minute excerpt from the full length installation HD video (2 hours).
I shot assemblages of paper sculpture over a period of 4 months.

"Bird of Paradise in Slow Time is a video piece that succeeds in creating one such alternate topography through the positioning of slow video studies of her drawings and studio environment against the rhythm of a steadily moving picture. Bird of Paradise in Slow Time is meditative, trance-inducing, and seductive. Just as you begin feel grounded in the folds of one image, the video dissolves before your eyes and you slip further into the layers of the gathered imagery flickering before you." -Cara Megan Lewis
This is part one of a 2 part HD ambient work for continuous display. The project imagines a secret communication between tule elks, grazing along the San Andreas Fault in the high desert,
and otters swimming and fishing 50 miles west in the waters off Montana de Oro, central coast California. One evening I was driving at dusk. the elk appeared. The film imagines locative positioning, a scoring of space, a hidden messaging. The soundtrack includes Morse Code tonal data transpositions of Twitter feed; suggesting the invisible ubiquity of electromagnetic positioning.

"i am spell bound by the movement in this film: broken up into 5 parallel (horizontally placed) film frames in almost constant motion and some less so...and over the rustling sounds (the parachute that is being unfolded or the tent that is constructed or some not yet known da Vincian flying apparatus or perhaps fishing device) are unfolding an uncertain plot, uncertain emotions, there is no resolution for this person there on this beach-head or sky-line, the unfolding seems unsuccessful but perhaps it is the contrary as i do not know the purpose of the flying apparatus, or modes of preparing the flying machine, and at the end the breath of the dance of this effort and the gliding motion of this split screen film finally become smaller and smaller, a little window in the black center of things, and pfffh, it is gone. This is quite an unusual and thrilling, mysterious film noir dance video, the protagonist is a woman, but one cannot be sure, i recognize a tattoo…
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
