Promo for Chirality by Brendan McCarthy

Fog Electric is the new album from North Atlantic Oscillation. It is now available as a 2CD set, featuring the original album along with a bonus disc containing the Chirality EP, which has previously only been available digitally.

The EP features remixes by the Mercury nominated act The Invisible and respected newcomers Nedry alongside the title track and an alternate mix of previous single 'Savage With Barometer'. In addition, the EP also features the band's cover of 'One Good Reason' by Bob Mould. Upon hearing the NAO version of the track, Mould was so impressed that he invited the band to support him on his upcoming UK tour (dates posted below)

North Atlantic Oscillation is the climactic phenomenon caused by fluctuations in the atmospheric pressure between the Icelandic low and Azores high; a clash of hot and cold. It seems a perfect tag for a band of such contrasts; -- the contrast of melding timeless rock moves with sequencing and the latest laptop technology, and the contrast of dark foreboding tones and blissed-out serotonin-fuelled pastoral sweeps. There's a surprise around every corner

NAO are based in Edinburgh. They are Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, programming) and Ben Martin (drums, synths, programming). They are joined live by Bill Walsh (bass, vocals) and Chris Howard (bass & synths).

Fog Electric was recorded and produced by Tony Doogan (Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian). The album was the follow-up to Grappling Hooks, the band's debut which received massive critical acclaim when it was released in 2010. The band have been championed by Guy Garvey, Marc Riley, Zane Lowe, BBC Scotland, BBC Introducing, Prog magazine, Drowned In Sound and many more.

  2. Promo for 'Savage with Barometer', directed by Brendan McCarthy.

North Atlantic Oscillation’s new album Fog Electric will be released on April 30th through Kscope. It produced by Tony Doogan (Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian). Fog Electric is the follow-up to Grappling Hooks, NAO‘s debut which received massive critical acclaim when it was released in 2010.

The title, taken from the lyric of the track Mirador, introduces a stormy theme that runs throughout the record's sounds - in the crashing electronics, delicate lulls, mystery and hidden soul beneath the surface: a leitmotif also reflected in the typically stylish and dramatic artwork.

"It's an album about doubt and loss, but there's a counterbalancing sense of resignation and even optimism too," explains singer Sam Healy. "One of the main themes is that of searching for meaning in a scientific, post-religious world. Science is absolutely a force for good, but after it showed us that the physical world is all there is, and that far from stripping experiences of their mystery this revelation actually makes them more mysterious, it sort of left us to our own devices in terms of producing the unscripted, improvised drama that is life-minus-god."

  4. Grappling Hooks, the debut album from North Atlantic Oscillation, was released earlier this year on Kscope. The record immediately received rave reviews across the board, including being named Zane Lowe’s record of the week, and their first UK headline tour confirmed their status as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge in 2010.

The band return in June with Ceiling Poem, the second single to be lifted from the album. The track was described as ‘a gentle dreambeat that explodes into a technicolour psych-out’ by Classic Rock and by The Quietus as ‘inverted, unexpectedly Byrds-inflected folktronica’.

They will also be embarking on a short tour of festival appearances this summer.

The band have been described as prog-pop and electro-rock, but really they just make music. The music has soaring harmonies and loud guitars and dreamy synths and heavy drums and strange effects and unexpected changes-of-mind.

Grappling Hooks is a subtle yet powerful kaleidoscope of purring electronics, atmospheric layers and hook-laden melodies. Preceded by single Drawing Maps from Memory, out on March 8th, the album proves that the praise that was heaped upon Callsigns EP was entirely justified.

It sounds nothing like you expect it to. But then that’s exactly what makes North Atlantic Oscillation so beguiling, intriguing and fascinating – there’s a surprise around every corner. Are you ready?

“Their bright, friendly electronics and Brian Wilson harmonies suggest Scotland may have the beginnings of its own Animal Collective. Ones to watch.” Metro

  5. Promo for Drawing Maps from Memory, taken from debut album, Grappling Hooks, on Kscope.

After a busy and exciting 2009, releasing their debut EP and playing shows with the likes of Porcupine Tree, Explosions in the Sky and Cymbals Eat Guitars, North Atlantic Oscillation’s debut album, Grappling Hooks, is released on March 22nd on Kscope.

The band have been described as prog-pop and electro-rock, but really they just make music. The music has soaring harmonies and loud guitars and dreamy synths and heavy drums and strange effects and unexpected changes-of-mind.

NAO are the Scottish based trio of Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, synths, sax, percussion), Ben Martin (drums, percussion, programming) and Bill Walsh (bass, synth bass, vocals). They describe themselves as playing their instruments within a computerised wall of sound.
