My father, Stewart Gardiner, and his friend, Bill Kamp, attempted to run the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in 1941. While they had some prior river experience, they had never before attempted a river as fast and technical as the Middle Fork. They started on a small tributary called Marsh Creek. Their intent was to float all the way to the Main Salmon, but due to problems along the way they had to abandon their trip above Dagger Falls. Kayaker Austin Rathman and Rafter Dan McCain run the 120 foot plus high Condit Dam on the White Salmon River at flood stage. The dam had a large hole blown in it on October 26, 2011 at high noon, and is now being removed.
