John Huston (Weinberg '99) and his expedition partner Tyler Fish flew to the northernmost point of North America on March 2 and began their harrowing journey to become the first Americans to ski unsupported to the North Pole.
With all their supplies in a 300-pound sled, the duo faced arctic temperatures and other polar obstacles in their inspiring race against time to the North Pole.

Northwestern alumnus Brian Shiro discusses life on Mars — and living on Earth's most Mars-like analog, Devon Island in Canada's northern Nunavut Territory, where he spent a month at the Mars Society's Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station. He hopes the experience will prepare him for a mission to the Red Planet.
Alumna Angela Jackson returned to Northwestern to read from "Where I Must Go" and talk about the creation of her debut novel — 40 years in the making. The book, published by TriQuarterly Books in 2009, is about an African American student coming of age in post–Civil Rights Act America at an elite, predominantly white university that resembles Northwestern at the time.
Led by Patricia A. Beddows, lecturer and assistant chair of Earth and planetary sciences, nearly 20 Northwestern students studied carbonate geology and aqueous geochemistry during an eight-day field trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. During the trip they snorkeled in cenotes, collected and dissected sediment cores, explored area rivers and enjoyed the region's culture and delicious Mexican fare.
From the 1869-built University Hall to today's LEED-certified green buildings, the new "Northwestern University: The Campus Guide" captures the architecture of the University. Written by Jay Pridmore, an architectural historian, the guide includes approximately 200 beautiful photos of both campuses by Peter Kiar, a noted Chicago architectural photographer.
