OluKai set out to celebrate the history of the bygone Ali‘i by creating a pedestal in the manner we do best. We spent years researching, gathering materials for, and designing these pieces marking a pinnacle in OluKai‘s commitment to quality.
This collection, with its material references to the royal ‘ahu‘ula capes, its highest quality leathers, its meticulous hand stitching, is created as an offering to these ancient Polynesian royals who held together a flourishing culture, a society where everyone worked in concert, a society we‘d be honored to live in.
Each pair is etched with a traditional Hawaiian phrase of community strength - Pupukahi i holomua: Unite in order to progress.
We‘d like to think that if the Ali‘i were still walking the islands today, they’d be walking in these.
A testament to the diversity of the Hawaiian islands, master canoe builder Keola Sequeira, one of Hawaii's celebrated wood craftsmen shows us his favorite pastime, the Japanese art of Kyudo.
Filmed at the historic Lahaina Jodo Mission in Maui.
