Pas and I are working on a small project together. "Packed". We needed to do a quick test with a DIY Green Screen to see how well the green blanket would work. Not to bad. I think we will use it for the actual shoot. Thanks Value Village!

After we did our Green Screen test - and saw that it would work - we story boarded out the scenes and then shot an animatic of the boards. This way we can watch the animatic and decide where all of the key animation sequences will start and end in our live action version. Enjoy!
Now that the story boarding is done and we know that our DIY green screen will work - we moved on to a few Motion Tracking tests. We just need to make sure that we can actually track ALL of the movement made by our lead actor on Principal Shoot Day #1. And it looks like we will!
Time to get our hands dirty! The computers are off today (not really - they are just rendering ) so we are building some of the practical elements to our pack. Check it out.
We needed to do a bit more motion track testing - so we used a new bag and some bigger sections of blue. Pas came up with a proxy animated pack to track on to the bag. He also worked up a cool looking smoke trail (actual smoke coming soon - this is just round particles) I held the camera and had a jack n coke. :)
All these behind the scenes have been shot on a Sony HDR-SR8 HD handycam through a 0.7x wide Except the shot in this clip of downtown…
Using the motion generated from the test shot as a guide, a final composite was generated complete with light cast, sky tracking and foreground smoke layering. The aim was to create something that fit into the plate shot fairly believably, but with a hint of graphic stylization to match the feel of the film's animation.
For the sound multiple layers were created to give the rocket some recognizable "rocket high end" noise as well as the deep booming…
This channel is a look at the steps we took to make the live action / animated short Packed. This is not a tutorial. Just a look behind the scenes. Enjoy!
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
