  2. Deep in the desert of southern California sits one of the worst environmental sites in America—a former tourist destination that has turned into a toxic soup: the Salton Sea.

The sea was born by accident 100 years ago, when the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal; for the next two years the entire volume of the river flowed into the Salton Sink, one of the lowest places on Earth. The new lake became a major tourist attraction, with resort towns springing up along its shores. Yet with no outflow, and with agricultural runoff serving as its only inflow, the sea’s waters grew increasingly toxic. Farm chemicals and ever-increasing salinity caused massive fish and bird die-offs. Use of the sea for recreational activities plummeted, and by the 1980s its tourist towns were all but abandoned.

The skeletons of these structures are still there; ghost towns encrusted in salt. California officials acknowledge that if billions of dollars are not spent to save it, the sea could shrink another 60 percent in the next 20 years, exposing soil contaminated with arsenic and other cancerous chemicals to strong winds. Should that dust become airborne, it would blow across much of southern California, creating an environmental calamity.

  5. photographer: Adam Pańczuk / text: Sindri Freysson

Elves have left the building! was the first thing that crossed my mind when photographer Adam Panczuk suggested we investigate the hidden realms of Iceland. Part of me was taken aback. Not that fucking cliché with the elves again! I thought to myself.

But clichés aren´t self-originated. And the more I thought about it the more interesting it seemed to me to dissect this – surprisingly alive and kicking – cliché. What would reveal it‘s ugly (or far from ugly) head when I cut it open?

And now we´re speeding across an empty highway in June on a night draped in blue in the year 2010 A.D., looking for people who are in some way associated with elf lore in today´s Iceland.

“We almost hit an elf back there,” I say to Adam. He quickly glances at the rear-view mirror but then he shakes his head and smiles, even though he was fooled for a moment. “The hidden people are not outside now,“ he says. „They know we are looking for them.”

“Maybe,” I admit. “They´re clever bastards.”

    ###

"Nie ma takiego tematu, dziękuję, dobranoc!” – to moja pierwsza reakcja na sugestię fotografa Adama Pańczuka, żeby zbadać ukryty świat Islandii. Trochę mnie zaskoczył. „Znowu ten cholerny stereotyp o elfach!” – pomyślałem.

Ale stereotypy nie biorą się z niczego. Im dłużej o tym myślałem, tym ciekawsza wydawała mi się wiwisekcja tego stereotypu, wciąż tak zadziwiająco żywotnego i żwawego.

I oto pędzimy pustą autostradą przez Islandię, w spowity w ciemny błękit czerwcowy wieczór roku pańskiego 2010, szukając osoby, która może nam coś powiedzieć o wierze w elfy w dzisiejszej Islandii.

„Prawie przejechaliśmy jednego elfa” – mówię do Adama. Natychmiast zerka w lusterko, ale zaraz potrząsa głową z uśmiechem. Na moment dał się nabrać.

„Ukryci ludzie nie wychodzą teraz z domów” – odpowiada. „Wiedzą, że ich szukamy.”

    „Może”– przyznaję. „To szczwane dranie.”
