The Planetary Science Channel

Our last Transit of Venus is a film project about the Transit of Venus 2012, supported by the European Planetology Network (Europlanet, http://www.europlanet-eu.org). Please visit www.vimeo.com/channels/ourlasttransitofvenus for other related videos. A Transit of Venus is when planet Venus passes in front of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This happens at intervals of 121.5, 8, 105.5, 8, 121.5, 8, etc. years. Transits of Venus were observed

    Searching for Neptune

    by Lightcurve Films

    Uploaded

On july 12 2011, at 10pm Greenwich Mean Time, planet Neptune will have completed one orbit around the Sun (in terms of heliocentric longitude) since it was visually discovered in the night of September 23 / 24 1846 in Berlin by Johann Galle and Heinrich d'Arrest, confirming the calculations by Urbain Leverrier and later also those by John Adams. Searching for Neptune is a film in the make about the incredible story that led to visual discovery and

    Scattering (the Science-Portrait Series)

    by Lightcurve Films

    Uploaded

Light scattering by small particles is a fundamental process in the atmospheres of the planets, in comets and interstellar clouds, affecting the radiative balance (amount of radiative energy going into and out) of a system. On Earth it is particularly important, as it affects the climate as a whole. In this Science-Portrait planetary scientist Olga Muñoz (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Granada, Spain) guides us into her lab and tells about

    LEGO® in space mission operations

    by Lightcurve Films

    Uploaded

In this short film, planetary scientist Detlef Koschny from the European Space Agency shows how simple LEGO® models helped him and his colleagues in planning the operation of the Rosetta spacecraft and other missions. The film is now part of the pilot educational kit 'Rosetta's Comet Touchdown'. Welcome to the Planetary Science Channel on VIMEO!

On this channel you will find films related to the field of Planetary Science: the study of the planets of our Solar System. It is a very exciting and interdisciplinary field of work that combines knowledge from other areas such as astronomy, geophysics, atmospheric science, etc..

Many of the films have an educational angle, some are more documentary. In all films the scientists themselves are the main communicators. All films are either english spoken or english subtitled.

You will also find talks by the world top planetary scientists, that were edited in a new way, adding unique value to the presentation.

You can find five other channels on VIMEO dedicated to Planetary Science. Four of these contain most of the talks that were presented during the conference Cassini-Huygens Project: Huygens Legacy and Future Titan Exploration, which was held from 13-15 of January 2010 in Barcelona. See vimeo.com/channels/huygens2titan1
and the three links therein.
There are a few of the presentations included in this channel too.

And there is the channel dedicated to the Rosetta's Comet Touchdown project, an educational project around the ESA Rosetta Lander using LEGO® MINDSTORMS®. See vimeo.com/channels/rosettascomettouchdown. Three of the five films are on this channel too.

About filmmaker Maarten Roos (Lightcurve Films):

I was a planetary scientist for many years. In 2006 I switched career to become a filmmaker. Planetary science has logically been a major theme of my films, that in some instances provide with a unique view behind the scenes that you will not find anywhere else. Also, you can be sure the content of what you see is correct at the time the film was made (this being a field of cutting edge research, our understanding of things does change!).

And there are more stories to tell!
