PUNY GODS! Curated Cinema for The Cultured and The Curious

  1. In the autumn of 1998, a profound tragedy echoed through a small Michigan farming town and twisted the well laid plans of a young prodigy in strange and inspired ways.

    The Juggle & Cut Original Soundtrack is available for $2 here: bit.ly/Y0QGOt. The delivery format is high quality m4a files via Dropbox sent to your PayPal email address. Soundtrack features 5 tracks, and runs roughly 10 min.

    Far and away in the chilling northern reaches of Michigan farm country lived 16-year-old Andy Phelps: an anomalous prodigy with a colorful resume. Andy juggled knives and fire for mass audiences, hand-made wood furnishings, thundered his motorcycle through the Midwest, captained his hockey team to a State Championship, and taught himself to unicycle and fire-breathe...all before turning seventeen. But late one autumn morning in 1998, Andy broke his neck and consequently lost the use of his hands and legs. Over a decade later, what should have been the last chapter in the life of a fabled prodigy became the first page of a new story, where against all odds he became the only known quadriplegic in an unexpected profession.

    The process of bringing Juggle & Cut to life was one of the most challenging and ultimately rewarding projects I've ever been apart of; I hope you receive as much from hearing Andy's story as I did while assembling it. Many thanks to Andy's brother David Phelps, Eric Machiela, Eric Johnson, Wlad Marhulets, Adam Burd, Chad Terpstra, Seth Herman, and all of our incredibly generous Kickstarter supporters. We wouldn't be here now without every one of you.

  2. Art, Design, Nature and Technology at Scale
    Exploratorium, Pier 15, San Francisco

    At nightfall on April 17th and 18th, Obscura Digital transforms the historic Pier 15 into a luminous portal revealing unseen dimensions of complex micro and macro phenomena. ‘Emergence’ takes visitors on a dynamic journey through a vivid array of non-computer generated, real-life visualizations that evoke a sense wonder and awe about the nature of order in our universe.

    To capture these marvels of nature, Obscura designed and fabricated ten miniature replicas of the Exploratorium’s façade, some microscopic, to contain unique experiments involving fluid dynamics, microorganisms, particle interactions, living systems, crystallization, and growth in time lapse. Documented in ultra high definition video, these compelling natural subjects are projection mapped back on the surface of the building, creating the illusion of being contained within its structure.

    In addition to the ‘Emergence’ exhibit, Obscura presents an interactive thermal imaging wall (in cooperation with Flir), located on the side of the Exploratorium building, where visitors can see their heat signature projected in real-time, at large-scale, with brilliant color.

    Obscura Digital: Garth Williams, Tim Digulla, Marc Melzer, Jennifer Spratt, David Shulman, Susan Ali, Matty Dowlen, Barry Threw, Ana Herruzo, Andrew Plourde, Gaston Albanell, Bryan Sullivan, Tom Sepe, Desmond Shea, Hoss Ward, Philip Briggs, Jim Ellis, Alexi Alexaieff, Josh Brott, George Rosenthal, Eric Schneider.

    Special thanks to:
    Dr. Karen Kalumuck, Exploratorium, biology consultation;
    Ben Stokes, Mission Control, cinematography and designs;
    Richard Weinberg, Ph.D., digital cinematography with optical microscopy;
    David Caron, Ph.D. and Alyssa Gellene, USC Dornsife College;
    Darren Kraemer & Saied Rezaei, Attodyne, Inc., microscopic laser milling;
    FLIR Systems, thermal imaging infrared cameras

  4. The laws of physics suggest that entropy will increase irreversibly across the universe over time. Film is used to reverse time’s arrow and the narrative acts as a countermeasure to its own content. (No sound.)
