Tangible Media Major Prize – Australasian CRC for Interaction Design
Sonic Footprints strives to inspire a social conversation about our current sonic environment and the attributes of which we have control as members of our acoustic community.
As sound is often considered the ambience of our civilisation, the sonic landscape often feels beyond our control, an inevitable, if unpleasant, accompaniment to progress. (Schafer, 1970). Barry Truax (2001, 66) discusses the identity of an “acoustic community” which is defined as any soundscape in which plays a pervasive role in the lives of the inhabitants.
The intention of Sonic Footprints is to create a scaled-down, interactive tangible medium whereby the audience builds a sonic-based reality by experimental urban planning. In producing this dynamic interactive sonic landscape, focus is targeted on our personal and collective impact on our local and global acoustic ecology. Provoking conscious reflection on personal sonic contribution is integral to the purpose of the installation and this is achieved by providing immediate sonic and visual feedback of choices when building the representational urban environment.
By utilising an amalgamation of fiducial tracking technology (reacTIVision), multi-channel audio routing (Flash ActionScript), top-down projection for associated visual feedback and hand crafted models of common urban features, Sonic Footprints is a highly immersive, embodied new-media installation.
