In “Indivisibility” I use a hula hoop, a decision that’s far from arbitrary. As an object, the hoop introduces unpredictability into an otherwise tightly choreographed performance. I respond to it almost unconsciously and it causes my body to move in peculiar ways that I find fascinating.
“Indivisibility” addresses barriers, contact, and the implausibility of contact, impediments. The hoop acts as an actual barrier, requiring approximately two feet on all sides. Yet before I even place the hoop on my body, contact between Jacob and myself occurs only once. When our hands trace each other’s bodies, there are always a few inches of air between us.

I tried to find and understand my points of correspondence with each of these different performers. I rehearsed with each apart from the others, not bringing us together until the last moment. During rehearsal I allowed for contamination, filtered by me, to diffuse from section to section in the form of a movement, idea, question, or object. Confetti is an experiment emerging from this structure, a danced obstacle course of uniquely talented individuals.
