The choreographic concert »gefaltet« by Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre opens Mozartwoche 2012 in Salzburg. This is the first collaboration between the French composer and the German choreographer.
As their material, Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre apprehend »folding«, or convolution – a procedure in electronic music that generates an acoustic response to acoustic impulses. With »gefaltet« this principle is broadened to a dialogue between dancers and musicians. Impulses and responses of their bodies unfold and intensify interstices and thresholds, emptiness and distances.
Together with eight dancers and four musicians, Sasha Waltz and Mark Andre investigate the interplay between classical and New Music, between sound, movement and silence.

Selected works including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s string trio KV 563 in E flat major and compositions by Mark Andre, such as »iv 1« for solo piano and the string trios »iv 2« and »iv 8«, constitute the musical field of experiment.

The solo instrumentalists performing »gefaltet« are Carolin Widmann (violin), Guy Ben-Ziony (viola), Nicolas Altstaedt (violoncello) and Alexander Lonquich (piano).
The dancers of Sasha Waltz & Guests are Edivaldo Ernesto, Todd McQuade, Virgis Puodziunas, Zaratiana Randrianantenaina, Yael Schnell, Saju Hari, Judith Sánchez Ruíz and Sasa Queliz.

Sasha Waltz has long been engaging with contemporary and classical compositions in her artistic endeavours. This process has produced the choreographic operas »Dido & Aeneas« (Henry Purcell), »Medea« and »Passion« (Pascal Dusapin) and »Matsukaze« (Toshio Hosokawa), but also works like Wolfgang Rihm’s »Jagden und Formen (Zustand 2008)« that introduce a new form of presentation to contemporary concert forms. The integration of the solo instrumentalists into both the development and staging of this piece marks a new dimension of interaction between dance and music in the genre-transcending work of Sasha Waltz.

For the first time Sasha Waltz develops a dance piece based on the structure of a classical music composition. The music will be performed live on stage together with vocal accompaniment of four »Schubert-Lieder«. The dance like the music create in a subtle way emotional states between weightless floating and being off balance. Sasha Waltz researches in her work the existential questions of the human body with its vulnerability and beauty. Dance at its most riveting, at once unmasking, manipulating, and ultimately exalting in the innumerable aspects that make us human.

The piece has been developed by and with the dancers Maria Marta Colusi, Clémentine Deluy, Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, Luc Dunberry, Michal Mualem, Claudia de Serpa Soares and Xuan Shi.

A brief overview on the artistic work of Sasha Waltz from the years 1993 - 2009 and its diverse locations: Excerpts from her first Berlin based project "Dialoge - Künstlerhaus Bethanien" being the research for her first international success, the "Travelogue - Trilogy" from 1993, followed by "Allee der Kosmonauten" (Sophiensäle, 1996), "Dialoge 99/II - Jüdisches Museum" (Berlin), the "Körper-Trilogie" – "Körper", "S" and "noBody" (Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz Berlin, 2000 -2002) – up to her first choreographic opera "Dido & Aeneas" (Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg/Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, 2005), "Dialoge 2006 - Radiale Systeme" (on the occasion of the opening of Radialsystem V - New Space for the Arts in Berlin, 2006), "Medea" (2009), Roméo et Juliette (Opéra National de Paris, 2009), "Dialoge 09 - Neues Museum" (Berlin) and "Dialoge 09 - MAXXI (Rome).
