In places like rural Africa, solar energy is a leapfrog technology. In the same way that Africa leapfrogged over landlines with mobile phones, they will leapfrog over electrical grids, for many of the same reasons. In Kenya, SolarAid is using a franchise system to meet the huge demand for solar products. Solar Aid has been busy recruiting and training the people who will take solar power to their communities. People like Ramonah Omukhobero. SolarAid's franchisees are small business people who sell micro-solar products like the Ravi to individuals and families. The Ravi is a small solar panel and charging unit which will charge mobile phones and provide room lighting. SolarAid also help institutions like schools and hospitals with larger solar installations. At any scale, SolarAid’s work is about economic partnerships, rather than simply distributing technology.
