5. Opening with a scene showing two people waking up, this film shows one side of a story an hour ahead of the other. Despite the girl on the left starting her day an hour ahead of the boy, the two engage in a similar morning routine. As they leave their houses, they are shown walking down the same street, the boy following in the girl’s footsteps, and when he notices a lost necklace on the ground and picks it up to inspect it, we see that it is the girl who dropped it an hour earlier. As the story progresses, the film juxtaposes various situations in which the boy follows the same path as the girl, though always an hour behind.
I paid close attention to the composition of each scene, framing shots in a way that emphasised the differences and similarities between the characters, and showed how intertwined their journeys were. In the final scene, the boy realises he is stuck behind the girl, and we see both characters sit down on a bench. When the girl is given back the necklace, we realise two things; the timing of the sides has changed somehow, and when the boy looks at an old photo of two kids it suggests the two knew each other when they were younger. Has the boy predicted where the girl will go and is waiting there? Or is the left side now showing what the boy wants to happen? I deliberately left this ending ambiguous, the final shot of the boy waiting on the bench lingering on with the credits, to leave the audience to contemplate what has happened.
