Vrindavan is one of India's most holy cities, and is closely associated with Krishna. These monochromatic photographs were made during the Holi festival, whose epicenter is Vrindavan. Departing from the explosive colors of Holi, these monochromatic photographs show the real Vrindavan...the daily devotional rituals in its streets, alleys and riverbanks.

The 'ecosystem' feeding off the shrine of the Sufi saint Moin'Uddin Chisti in Ajmer (Rajasthan) consists of pious pilgrims, vagabonds and charlatans, sightseers, mendicants and beggars, fakirs, shoppers, established and opportunistic vendors, pickpockets and thieves, the poor, the wealthy, the venal and the innocent...who come here during the Urs to seek spiritual salvation, riddance of 'jinns', money and entertainment.
Thai Truang Dao is a 92 years old Vietnamese, living in Hoi An with his wife, Thai Mo Ba. He established Cafe Dao in the mid forties, before the battle of Dien Bien Phu and much before the Vietnam War (known as the American War in Vietnam). Cafe Dao was a meeting place for socializing, gossip and friendship.
Bao and his wife were school mates but after their graduation didn't meet until she was 28 years old. Extremely unusal for a Vietnamese woman, Ba hadn't yet married...waiting for Bao whom she loved. They met again, and married.
Bao wasn't drafted by the Vietcong during the American war due to his Chinese ancestry.
This "photo-film" is made of photographs and ambient audio made during my The Oracles of Kerala Photo Expedition-Workshop in March 2012.
Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world, and originated in Kerala. Kathakali is a group production, in which actors-dancers take various roles in performances based on themes from Hindu mythology, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The elaborate make up sessions often take longer than the performances themselves, and follow a certain ritual. I chose to process the photographs in sepia (DxO Labs).
Still photographs made with a Canon 5D Mark II and a Leica M9. Audio recording with a Tascam DR40.
