This is a short video I put together with images and video clips from the waters around Ambon in the Maluku province of Indonesia.
Ambon is home to the recently described Maluku frogfish (Histiophryne psycheledica) and many other amazing animals that live in the waters around the island. The marine life featured in this video represent just a small fraction of the weird and wonderful critters I came across in the area.

Captain Craig DeWit of the MV Golden Dawn (http://www.mvgoldendawn.com) describing the Eastern Fields of Papua New Guinea, one of my favourite dive destinations (despite the fact that I have to travel with Craig to visit the Eastern Fields).
I took all the video with Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D cameras during a trip in November/ December 2009.

Maluku frogfish at Laha II dive site in Ambon Bay, approximately two to two and a half metres of water. Note the unsuccessful attempted bite by the moray eel, which then swam away.

Short, light-hearted video showing what it was like to dive with thousands of fish swarming under the jetty at Samarai Island in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea.
It was cloudy and light conditions were far from ideal: bright diffuse whitish light from cloudy skies outside the jetty + dark shadows under the jetty. Lots of plankton in the water too, which is probably one of the reasons the fish were gathered in such large(!) numbers.
There were several…
Saddleback anemonefish (Amphiprion polymnus) are obsessive about tending to their eggs. There are many photographs showing these fish taking care of the next generation, but somehow, a single image doesn't quite convey how much energy these devoted piscines invest in ensuring healthy offspring.
The eggs are the bright orange patch in on the right side. Two large fish tend to the eggs, with other, sexually immature fish mill around the host anemone.

Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
