The paintings are subjected to elements of taste and judgement etc., in their exsistance in the world/art world.
These paintings are transformed into actors/symbols. In the video the chance of wind and light threaten their rigidity and the ability for the structure to hold together as a metaphor for the previous statement. Will they hold up? 2009
James Kalm makes a parenthetical tour focusing on a couple of exhibitions located at the margins of Williamsburg. Adam Simon has been an artistic force in Williamsburg since founding 4 Walls in the early 1990s. This show at Pocket Utopia features paintings and an installation of stencils collected over a period of 15 years. Across the ‘Berg, viewers are brought along for the debut exhibition of “Boiler” a new project space developed by Pierogi’s Joe Amrhein. Despite the economic downturn, Amrhein believes that conditions cried out for the creation of a space that could accommodate the kinds of ambitious projects that put Williamsburg on the map. Jonathan Schipper’s “215 Points of View”, “JFK” a twenty foot painting by Yoon Lee and “Arctic Ice Project” by Tavares Strachan are examples of the large scale pieces that the “Boiler” will host. Featuring interviews with Adam Simon, Jonathan Schipper and Joe Amrhein.
An on-going, collective painting being created by an ever-growing number of hands in multiple installments. Participants paint on the 5' X 4' canvas while I stand behind them with a camera, tripod, and tireless thumb, continuously snapping pictures to capture the art that is their experience with the glory of stop-motion. This video shows the maiden voyage of this canvas and was projected on the wall behind the painting at its next session a month later. Its image appears in the background of that stop-motion, which will appear in the stop-motion of the one after that, which will appear in the stop-motion of the one after that, picture in picture in picture.
Conducted on January 25th, 2010 at Make My Monday at Fort Mason Center.
