Hundreds of University of Utah students, faculty and staff cleaned up locations around Salt Lake Valley as part of the Bennion Center's 10th annual Earth Day service event, which consisted of four different service-learning opportunities. One of those four saw volunteers make Bend-in-the-River Park in Salt Lake City a more beautiful place for the entire community. There aren't many universities in the world that offer a course with these class assignments: "skin" up (on touring skis) into the Wasatch mountain wilderness, set up camp, equipped with a deluxe snow kitchen, and summit peaks to learn some "self-arrest" techniques, followed by a run or two through untouched powder in Utah's famed backcountry terrain.
