CTD3's Us Folk music guests

  1. Singer songwriter David Wax spent a fruitful time in Mexico absorbing the culture and studying the regional folk music in his year of study there. He came away with songs like this one off his new one entitled "I turned off Thinking About" , done here live on WMPG's Us Folk.
David plays the jarana. a cool eight string instrument.

  2. Boston based singer songwriter Abbie Barrett wanted to
give her friend (who was getting married) something special as a gift.
"Somehow" she says " ,,this song came to her rather easily
and her friends was blown away by it.
Here performing it with second guitar accompaniment
by session guitarist Steve Levy also from the Boston Music scene.

    Abbie is here= AbbieBarrett.com
Abbie Barrett has a 4 song EP out and is currently
working on a full length CD which she says should be out soon.

  3. Boston area singer songwriter came in on the morning of May the ninth. Abbie has a lot of singing experience in her background as a background singer for other artists and now strikes her own path with a recent 4 song-ger EP .

She stopped in with veteran Boston area session guitarist Steve Levy. This is what she left the listening audience with, spare guitars no effects Abbie's guitar mic w a Shure 57 & another 57 on an amp Steve ran his guitar out through to the mic instead of a direct (Steve's request).

Although there was no drone happening my mind puts one hovering under the track like the drone of deep bass sitar strings, ( i don't know can you "hear me" on that?)

Abbie Barrett is working on a yet untitled full length CD out sometime in the near future check her @ AbbieBarrett.com I hope you can not only catch some of her singing but man the woman can whistle better than most people and do it on the beat & in key!

  4. Another track from Joe & Mike, members of the Northern Lights Band ( NorthernLightsBand.com ) and several other projects between them. Both undoubtedly virtuoso players.
The tune here is a reel , an old trad tune called "Old French"

wanting to keep the entire tune in the clip I stacked on pic to the front , a time where I was doing radio stuff like data entry level adjustment etc and then starting shoot half way into the tune.

i love how they each play off one another and how mando & fiddle sound great together.
Note that joe will again appear on the show Jun 13th with his band "JOY KILLS SORROW" a five piece acoustic band

  5. Mike Barnett is a phenomenal fiddler he has worked hard for 13 plus years to develope as a player. Herein he displays a style of playing called chopping.

I know I mis-spelled his name in the clip hey it was late and my editor had gone to bed! (I know dumb! sorry Mike!)

Unfortunately the mics were readjusted in mid stream since we had not had time to go over or be really clued into what the players were doing once adjusted the fiddle dominated until the last third but hey this is community radio on the fly / with this volunteer host (yours truly) wearing several hats all the while with my jaw on he floor watching mike play/chop and sing.

The Program director and two community members who were shadowing me doing the show burst out in spontaneous applause. The Program Director said with the hundred or so guests he'd witnessed play on the show that he couldn't help but applaud and that was a first.
He is a member of several bands
