Onar3D - Dark Spaces ft. Placa del Centre - HD

Live procedural animation, controlled solely using musical notation data (MIDI), and multi-channel pitch, amplitude and beat detection. All graphics are rendered in real-time.

The software used for the visuals is Mother 0.4, a free open source program I've developed for VJ-ing with multiple Processing.org sketches.

The music I have also made myself, and is a remix of Placa del Centre's Dark Spaces, featuring the wonderful voice of their singer Leni. You can listen to their music, including the original rendition of Dark spaces, at: myspace.com/placadelcentre.

Although for this animation I’ve used pre-recorded multi-track audio and MIDI, my motivation for developing the system used has been to perform with it in a live setting, accompanying a live musical performance.

Towards that goal I am currently looking for musicians/groups interested in my accompanying them!

My musical tastes are I'd say as broad as can be, so I am looking for any musical genre that would work well with the type of visual material I am able to produce: abstract and generated digitally in real-time.

In order for my system to work, the musical performance will either need to be using live instruments, or programs such as Ableton Live, so that I have enough MIDI and audio channels to use as control input for the visuals.

The timeframe for this is until mid January 2010, and I’d prefer to collaborate with musicians living in or near London where I currently live. The collaboration would be free of charge, and the only thing I expect in return is that musicians agree to be interviewed about their experience, so that I can write about it in my thesis.

This is a variation of a previous animation (vimeo.com/6142818), created to conform with the requirements of a festival that I submitted it to. In the end it was not accepted, but I still like it enough to think it is worth submitting here!

I have to say though, Vimeos compression is not being very kind to the video, especially in the beginning there's a great lot of artefacts.

In February of 2009 we got a call from Catherine Owens, the long time super creative director for the uber-famous band U2. Catherine came across our work and knew she found the team who could help with U2’s 2009 world tour (titled 360). After a quick stint of meetings in New York, we came back to the Bangkok studio and begin work for the following two months on numerous ideas. We began our development on the videos for the tracks Beautiful Day, Ultra Violet and The Unforgettable Fire. The first series of works involved filming small fish common in the canals of Bangkok for very fluid and dreamlike sequences. For the second series we explored mapping the films into a 3d space and further distorting them for an enhanced depth and perspective. Then for the last series of works we explored more solid colors, 2d and fast paced clips to stimulate lighting effects and screen energy during the performance. In the end we created over 100 different sequences, with over 300 total clips delivered in various formats, colors and speeds.

The concert opened in Barcelona on June 30, 2009 to a sold out crowd of 90,000 fans. The screen that displayed this work was designed by Willie Williams, Mark Fisher, Chuck Hoberman, and Frederic Opsomer. The screen was composed of 888 individual hexagonal panels that support 500,000 Barco LED pixels. It can transform from seven meters to 22 meters high and move up and down.

Rush Hour London

An experimental Time Lapse film exploring rush hour in London. Inspired by Koyaanisqatsi, the film uses time lapse photography techniques to create the visuals. A DSLR was set up to take a frame every 2 secs with a shutter speed of around 0.3 - 2 secs with an ND8 filter was used to create a motion blur which helps to increase the sense of rush and movement within the film.

In February '09 I went to New Orleans to attend NRECA (National Rural Electric Coop Assoc.) conference. I've never been to New Orleans and had no idea what Mardi Gras is until I get there. But before the trip I've check where Sheraton hotel is located. So, I've took my camera with small tripod and at checkin I asked for room with river view.
She gave me that room (thank you Sheraton!) and my camera was doing time-lapse sequence for couple of days.
After hours of experiments I converted this time-lapse photos into what I call Imprevionism.
Maybe it's too long, let me know.

I use the term "Imprevionism" to describe a technique of mixing many photos from the time-lapse sequence. Irregular, random patches are copied from several photos to show different lights and colors during the day within the same picture.
I thought about this effect many years ago.
Recently I have made some progress with this technique, but I'm still not sure if it makes sense to others.
For mixing those photos I was using program I wrote in Processing programming language (www.processing.org), which is just great.

Obviously, I was inspired by Impressionism.

The Nest That Sailed The Sky

I was asked to develop the ’story’ further from the original test (you can see on this page), and got some visual ideas from looking through photos from the original album shoot. I got three extra visual ideas from this - single cells, an empty nest, trails of red berries.
