The pampas were flat, hot, and sparsely populated. We frequently bicycled for 2 or 3 days without even passing anything but a ranch and most of them were way off the road. Fortunately mountains and valleys appeared out of nowhere. These dramatic changes in landscape helped break the monotony of the barren pampas.
Bicycling through northern Argentina was somewhat monotonous. Almost all of it was flat pampa. In stark contrast, once in a while we would pass through spectacular desert regions.
