Indigenous people have a special place in the environmental movement. As defenders of their land and protectors of some of the world’s last pristine ecosystems, they are readily identified with the places like the Amazon that so much of this movement fights to protect. Moreover, in the Americas in particular, where indigenous people have been fighting for 500 years against colonization and imperialist encroachment on their land, indigenous people represent the strength and perseverance which we all will need to face the challenges that are coming. It’s for this reason that the Earth Charter explicitly calls for affirming, “the right of indigenous peoples to their spirituality, knowledge, lands and resources and to their related practice of sustainable livelihoods.”

This is Because We Must
Because We Must is founded on the idea that all forms of oppression and, in turn, the struggles against them, are intimately connected. The subjugation of the earth, it’s non-human animal inhabitants, and the people that are not members of the wealthy white male elite are not unrelated phenomena. Each of these, among the many other injustices that must be confronted, is a product of the white supremacist, patriarchal, capitalist culture that dominates the planet. If we intend to mount a serious attempt at confronting, undermining, and overcoming the forces of oppression, we should understand that though there are many battles to fight and many more ways to fight them, we will always face the same essential enemy.
In order to promote this awareness and move forward, Because We Must strives to be a source for informational media that illuminates both the diversity and interconnectedness of struggles against oppression. Rather than pushing a monolithic set of beliefs and expecting others to tow the party line, we intend to present a wide range of radical viewpoints on the urgent issues that we face today and, in doing so, encourage every person to find the ways that their passionate opposition to injustice can be translated into effective action against it.
Song: Braveyoung 'the light narrows'
In October of 2011, we traveled to Flagstaff, AZ and were able to meet up with Jeneda and Clayson Benally of the Save The Peaks Coalition and the Navajo nation based punk band Blackfire. In the video, Jeneda and Clayson discuss the desecration of the sacred San Francisco Peaks and what this cultural genocide means to the indigenous community. They also touch on the disrespect and exploitation that is being put on the 13 different tribal nations in the south west and how it is interconnected to the bigger picture of racism and genocidal policies of the past.
