Charles Dickson is from Los Angeles, California. I’m in the process of earning my M.S in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. I graduated in May 2010 from Xavier University with a B.A. in Communications and a minor in Business. While at Xavier, I served as sports anchor/producer/writer/director at the campus television station.
Since I was a little kid I’ve been very passionate about sports which led me to pursue a career in sports journalism. I love writing, researching and developing sports stories for public consumption. I am a very determined individual who feels the best way to learn the craft is through applied experience. As such, I have held various internship positions, most recently I was a sports intern at KABC-TV, the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles. Previously, I interned at WSYR ABC 9 in Syracuse, WXIX Fox 19 in Cincinnati as a sports producer, and WLWT NBC 5 in Cincinnati as sports anchor/reporter intern.
With each internship, I have honed my skills. At KABC, I went out into the field and interviewed players from the Dodgers, Clippers, Lakers, and Oregon Ducks. At WSYR ABC 9 & WXIX Fox 19 the sports producer assigned me to shoot video of both professional and high school teams (working under tight deadline), and then edited the footage on Edius, Avid or Final Cut Pro. I’m also proficient with ENPS news scriptwriting software. At WLWT NBC 5 I wrote scripts for the weekend sports segment and logged and edited sports highlights for the newscasts.
When I am not talking, watching, or reading about sports I am listening to music. Music, like sports, brings people together and helps different people find a common bond. Sports reporting will always be my first love but music is my soul.
