The People Person - Joan Main

At Amica West Vancouver, Joan Main shows how she spends her time meeting people and making people feel comfortable.

Main really cares about the community and she loves to meet new people. She is on the residents' council, participates in crafts, is one of several volunteers in the tuck shop, and is also a greeter, making sure new residents feel welcome. "I try to make sure they have someone to go down to dinner with," she says. For her, the secret to enjoying life in a retirement community is to accept that your life is different than it was before and to live in the present. "You can't dwell in the past. The past is over," she says. "You're here and this is a new lifestyle entirely. You are now in the present and if you keep that in mind, I think that's what makes people happy."
