I used a Nikon D80 hooked up to a small portable intravalometer called the P-clix. It's about $130 and the size of a deck of cards. It allows you to set your interval between shots to anywhere between 1 frame per second to 1 frame per month. It's a fantastic item and it's available here: pclix.com/pages/pclix_main.html
