Colonizing the cosmos is a dream as old as humanity. And now,
with the aid of a few guitars, a banjo, a computer and a handful of musicians, that dream has finally become reality. Sort of.

It all came about in a bit of a backwards way: an attorney hums
melodies and emails them to a filmmaker friend. This filmmaker
plays just about every instrument but a trumpet and lays down
complete backing tracks. The attorney then hears the tracks and
writes the lyrics. Momentum quickly builds and a complete album is recorded over a few months (they find a trumpet player from craig’s list for the horn parts). The pair realize this is all a bit more than they first thought and there’s no way they can reproduce the music live by themselves. So they bring in a photographer friend who plays half as many instruments as the filmmaker and they all go back to pull together an inspired live version of their recorded material.

Since then, the Pittsburgh-based indie/folk band Colonizing
The Cosmos, armed with their fifteen track concept album
“The First Frontier” has been out looking for stargazers and
navelgazers alike, hoping to bring everyone together to enjoy
their dense, catchy, cosmic tunes.
