It would probably be less awkward to use because you can rest your palm beneath it. The 20mm pancake prime lens, however, is so small that you can really only hold onto it with your thumb and pointer finger and so manual focus creates quite a bit of camera shake. Using a larger prime lens (from a third party) might make it easier for you to hold the camera, but I'm concerned the camera body size with a prime lens is just going to make manual focusing too hard. I intend to pick up an adapter for the Nikon F mount one of these days, so I'll eventually find out, but right now they cost a bit more than I'd like to pay.

26 days agoAdam Dachis commented on Panasonic GF1 Shaky FootageThe 20mm lens doesn't zoom. It's a prime lens. You zoom with your feet, so to speak. Focusing manually with this lens is done by turning the focusing ring on the lens, yes, but you need to turn on manual focus to even allow it. Manual focus with the 20mm is very frustrating. If you intend to manually focus you ought to buy a third-party lens (like a Nikon lens) and get an adapter so you can use it on the GF1. That'll give you proper manual focus. It's still awkward, however, because the camera is too small. If you're thinking of getting this camera primarily for video, rather than photo, I would recommend against it. It can take some nice looking video but is very impractical. As a still photo camera, however, it's wonderful.
I have too much to do tonight to do a manual focus test. I think there may be some manual focus footage in the initial test footage I posted. I think I mention when I'm manually focusing during it, and how the camera is shaking a lot. I'd check that. Otherwise, if there isn't any, I can probably do that for you in a few days. -
