DACS Open
DACS Open is about opening up the world of visual artists to new audiences and opening up opportunities for artists in the digital space. Since it was established in 1984, by artists for artists, DACS has sought to develop new revenue streams to help artists support their practice. The median wage for a visual artist in the UK today is £10,000, less than the minimum wage for the country as a whole. Artists' incomes, which come from a variety of sources, are being threatened by the current economic recession and public funding cuts. Against this background, DACS Open was launched in 2011 with a series of experimental workshops -- in collaboration with artists and with the innovative technology company Jaggeree -- to develop digital tools that will open up new opportunities for artists to engage new audiences directly, investigate new distribution channels and develop unexplored revenue streams.
