Rya was born in Massachusetts, USA, and relocated to Australia at age 12. Music has always been a huge part of his life well before DJing, including many years playing the guitar, drums and other instruments in live band and orchestral settings.
It was in 2003 that friends first introduced Rya to DJing. It was also around this time that drum & bass was making a massive resurgence across the club world. From that introduction, Rya’s vinyl addiction soon began. His record collection was starting to take shape as he invested in a pair of Technics and never looked back.
In 2005 Rya settled in Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia. In 2006 he started the Jungle in the Outback series, which saw talent from across Australia and the globe converge on a small wine region 3 hours from Adelaide. Rya has pushed drum & bass beyond city stages with the JITO series, helped budding DJs gain a footing in the scene through the Underground Sound DJ Competition, as well as having taken on regular hosting and guest roles on Soundpond.net and Fresh 92.7 respectively. In 2012, Rya was crowned Best South Australian Drum n Bass DJ in the Australia-wide Homegrown FreQs DnB DJ Competition.
Rya has performed at events and residencies across a number of Adelaide venues alongside a who's who of local talent. He has also dropped international sets at festivals including Camp Bisco (New York, 2007) and Jam Cruise (Caribbean Sea, 2011). Rya is a current co-host of The Usual Suspects on internet radio station Soundpond.net (Sundays from 4-8pm).
Rya has supported a broad list of acts from across the globe, including London Elektricity, DC Breaks, Total Science, Mampi Swift, Grooverider, DJ Storm, B-Complex, Tiki Taane (Salmonella Dub), Q-BiK, Well Being, Lickweed, Bassnectar, Seven, Youthman, Kid Kenobi, Lyrics Born, Slick Rick and more.
