"The 18-Year Old Brooklyn MC does a great job putting his lifelines between the paper’s lines. Trust me keep an eye out for this kid, he’s gonna be a problem." - XXL Magazine
When you think of new, fresh, talented artists with a new style and futuristic vision that is unheard of, who do you think of? Or an artist who is very eclectic and has a great understanding of his culture and the history of not just Hip Hop but music as a whole? A new breed of artists are upon us. Ahead of that pack is Brooklyn artist, D.Julien.
D.Julien was born in Brooklyn, New York. He's an artist that got into Hip Hop at a young age. He thrives on making "life" music. Music that everyone can relate to - no matter age, race or music preference. During his interview with 102.5 FM in NYC, he said "I want my audio art to be soothing to my listener's ears. The picture I illustrate should satisfy my listeners every time. This is also why you don't hear profanity or racial slurs such as the "N" word in my music". Growing up in the streets of Brooklyn, he's been through his share of rap battles. He realized in 2004 that it was time to create timeless music. He knew at an early age he'd have to take a different approach with his music. "I just want to be viewed as a very eclectic artist and I don't want my style to be compared to anyone else." says D.Julien. This mentality allows him to make the unique music that he does as he still maintains that New York demeanor.
His first solo mixtape, "Let Me Introduce Myself" was released on July 17, 2008 and it was done to really get his foot in the door. Unsure of direction, D.Julien put that first project out to see how the masses would respond to his debut. The response was overwhelming enough to warrant him continuing to pursue his dream. His second project, "The Experiment" was released on February 17, 2009. It was downloaded over 7,500 times and it really gave D.Julien a steady fan-base and some looks. More popular media outlets such as 2dopeboyz.com, DJBooth.net, Okayplayer.com, Nahright.com allowed their readers to become familiar with D.Julien as they posted it on their website, etc. D.Julien's sound was truly identified in this project as the young artist let his direction and goal be known in it. It was very versatile and was critically acclaimed. His latest project, "Live, Love, Learn" was released on July 1, 2009. It has been downloaded more than 9,000 times which clearly shows the rise in D.Julien's fan-base. The buzz around it was big enough to warrant XXL Magazine's website to include this project in an article about fellow Hip Hop Artist, Drake. The future is bright for this prodigy. Get on board and support! All projects can be downloaded in the discography section.
D.Julien has been featured on the premier music sites such as XXLmag.com, Nahright.com, 2dopeboyz.com, Allhiphop.com, Hiphopdx.com, was Myspace Artist of the Week, etc. His style attracts fans from all over the world as it is not the average "boom bap" sound that New York rappers are often stereotyped for. D.Julien works hard to make his music not just meet his own personal standards but to surpass the expectations of his fans all over. Some of the more notable venues that he has performed at are in Granville, Ohio at Denison University, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Bowery Poetry Club, Sugar Bar, Five Spot Lounge and many others. He takes his live show performances very seriously and believes that it's one of his strong points as an artist.
Aside from the internet buzz, D.Julien has recieved radio airplay on 91.1 FM in Columbus, Ohio, 96.7 FM in New York City, 102.5 FM in New York City, 90.3 FM in New Jersey, 93.5 FM in Toronto, Canada, 96.7 in Trinidad & Tobago, 98.5 FM in New Zealand, Playvybz in the United Kingdom - just to name a few. Also has received airplay on various college radio airwaves such as Brooklyn College, S.I.N.Y, Duke University, Denison University, George Washington University, Rhode Island College, Rutgers University, LaGuardia Community College and many more.
His music ranges anywhere from political issues to his personal experiences to experiences of others which gives us authentic music to listen to. "I think a lot of artists are scared to think outside of the box. The artists that are cliche and fail to challenge their minds to make more creative and enjoyable music for the masses are the artists that will not be successful when hip hop starts to evolve more rapidly. Hip Hop is a movement. Rap as a genre of music is part of that movement. Other music such as House, Techno, Rock, etc. are now being accepted into the Hip Hop movement. So as an artist, to maximize your fan base and to keep it fresh you have to accept the cultural changes while still being yourself." says D.Julien. He has a great understanding of music currently and for music of the future.
