OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY (concise)
Douglas Whates (b. 1981) studied composition with Dr. Gordon McPherson at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, won the Patron’s Fund Prize (Royal College of Music) for Composition in 2003, and graduated in 2004 with 1st class honours.
Equally active as a bassist, he has performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Ballet Orchestra; appears as a sideman for London session ace Hugh Burns and guitarist John Goldie; has featured on BBC Radio as both composer and performer on numerous occasions; and is a founding member of the acoustic chamber ensemble, Frevo Quartet.
