Peace Good People! I am d. Sabela grimes aka Ovasoul7 a multi-hyphenated artist whose work seeks to expand beyond contemporary notions of Hip Hop culture and aesthetics. Each piece is a journey through the present future of Hip Hop’s past and the corrugated spaces of its many incarnations. I creatively concoct a mix of social/historical observation, self-examination and exploration to “familiarize the mystery and mystify the familiar.”
I received an MFA in choreography from UCLA’s World Arts and Culture Department and a BA in English also from UCLA. Yet, most of my knowledge base comes from my continued studies at Sidewalk University. My performance work and pedagogical approach reveal my invested interest in the physical and meta-physical efficacies of Black dance practices. I created and continue to cultivate a technique-based approach to learning Black dance vernacular dances/dance forms called Funkamentals.
I have conceived and presented a body of dance theater work such as World War WhatEver?, 40 Acres & A Microchip: Salvation or Servitude, Sankofa and an evening length solo work entitled BULLETPROOF DELI, nationally and internationally. Each piece, I think, blissfully exemplifies my propensity to FUNKtion as a performer, choreographer, writer, composer, actor and costume designer.
