Emanuel Gibson is about to release his debut LP, The Yellow Van.

Gibson’s unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family meant that he was always surrounded by different forms of music. His mother was singer and church choir director, and his parents exposed him to a wealth of music as a child, all of which influenced his development.

His first foray into learning an instrument himself came when he started to play the violin at seven years old. Later he began to play the trumpet and baritone, whom he continued with for four years before finally, put away his musical interest for sports.

After his brief and modest success playing sports collegiately he then transferred to Morehouse College where his musical journey inevitably picked up again. Gibson taught himself how to play the piano and after graduation he found interest in playing the guitar.

He purchased a guitar off of craigslist.com for $50 and began teaching himself chords and scales from a book that a friend gave him. He met a guy in his Brooklyn neighborhood who would sit on his stoop playing and he asked him if he could teach him what he knew about the guitar. The guys response was, “I don’t really know how to play, but I can show you what I know.”

After realizing that making music was his main goal, he began to showcase his talent in various venues across New York City, playing numerous gigs and making sure that his name and music were being heard by as many people as possible. He was quickly noted for the unique style that he brought to the untraditional rock scene.

Gibson credits his major musical influences to The Tallest Man On Earth, Bob Dylan, George Harisson, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Pink Floyd, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Beatles, Ramones, Buddy Guy, James Brown, Mott The Hoople, T-Rex, Magazine, New York City’s very own Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Love and many others.

Many changes that have affected and influenced his song-writing over recent years have been his development of political writing, an area that he pays a lot of attention to and incorporates to a certain degree in his music, employing sound bites of news reports to add to some of his songs.

Emanuel has taken it upon himself to take up an entirely different, though wholly satisfying, hobby of abstract painting and poetry writing. The satisfaction he gets from indulging in his many passions has led to a spiritual bond with him.
